Achieving the Scottish Renewable Obligation Certificate by switching to Low-Carbon Electric Heating

Low-Carbon heating is today’s gold standard for electric heating systems, and the Scottish Government is leading the field with ambitious but achievable targets. By 2030 the Scottish Government aims to generate the equivalent of 50% of Scotland’s overall energy consumption from renewable sources, and by 2050 to have decarbonised the energy system almost completely.

They are taking firm action to achieve this, by engaging with all suppliers of heating systems to source electricity from renewable sources via their renewables obligation. Working in tandem with similar legislation in other parts of the UK, the ROS obliges electricity suppliers to source an increasing proportion of the electricity they supply from renewable sources.

The scheme operates through the issuing of Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs, or SROCs in Scotland) to operators of accredited renewable generating stations for the eligible renewable electricity they generate. Operators can trade ROCs with other parties and can be acquired by suppliers to demonstrate that they have met their obligation. Renewables obligation 2026 to 2027

In accordance with article 12(4), the Scottish Ministers confirm that the obligation level for suppliers to customers in Scotland for the obligation period 2026 to 2027 will be 0.472 ROCs/MWh. This will be in effect from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.

HOW YOU CAN HELP ACHIEVE THIS TARGET

With most of Scotland being off-grid, or in multiple floor properties which have been divided into flats or apartments and then sold either Freehold or Leasehold; its an easy option to replace fossil fuel gas and oil central heating systems with IntelliHeat Low-Carbon electric heating, powered by renewable energy instead of gas, oil, or LPG fired boilers.

Using our Smart Heating Management System that is connected to the IoT and controlling all your radiators (residential and commercial)  from an easy to use cloud based APP on your phone/tablet/laptop, gives you a smarter, more sustainable way to heat your home. By combining PV solar panels with advanced battery storage, you can operate your INTELLI HEAT wi-fi connected Electric Radiators using 100% renewable energy, significantly decreasing your carbon footprint and enhancing your energy self-sufficiency.

Every property and every business, whether in a rural location or in a Town or City can make a difference to this target, and in doing so, will reduce their own energy consumption, their ongoing Bills, and their Carbon Footprint , setting an example to future generations that can be followed and replicated  with ease.
